Why Filemaker has these problems at all with apple software updates? I am now urged to buy me a new version of Filemaker 17 advanced to run my old programs I hope I can update the files to FM17??? And actually this makes me really angry. I have only two choices: buy or burry.

It would be a pity to trash all my developments which I am currently using. But I think with some creative business planning, you can come out on top. It may be a matter of adding more tools to your toolbelt. There are some really good options out there. They require more coding and a much steeper learning curve for you, but it may help cover the gap that the change in pricing my cause for you.

Changing the tool or adding a tool, learning something new is not so much the problem. I'd be happy to pay 10x the price for FMPA as well if that was the case. Given my recent foray into xcode though, I say it's probably a long shot. See above comments about "filemaker is a for-profit company". Where's the revenue stream for them if they won't sell any more licenses? While I'd love an AppStore Ready solution too I think this one may have a lot of serious implications.

Due to the sandboxed nature of the AppStore and the very open nature of FileMaker solutions that can interact with many other portions of the host computer developers could run into a lot of rejection emails.

There are also licensing issues - that's why the runtimes are crippled; PDF creation, charts. A part of me would be sad to see the runtime disappear but another excited by what could replace it. Any further clarification on this depreciation would be appreciated. Most of us can't sit around and hope for 18 month until FileMaker 15 is released. Jared, did you ask? The problem here is the lack of clear statement from FMI. English is not my mother tongue but I have learned the meaning of "care" like in "customer care".

Please ask. I'm curious to see if you will get something else than silence, silence, silence. Agreed Joshua. The roadmap seems clear enough to me.

FMI's public statements, "platform" strategy, recent product feature positioning, licensing restructuring… the theme is server-centric, with clients for various platforms, and an aim for ubiquity. I don't expect to see FMI's internal planning documents, but just listening to what they've been saying for the past few years has given me a pretty good idea where they're headed. And if I still needed old features, well, it's not like my old keys have quit working.

But with the runtime being deprecated you can see a date on the horizon, where a new OS, new hardware or whatever will lead to incompatibilities of your old key. I like to be prepared - either with information about a new key coming or with an alternative key in hand. LOL, if only you realized how many pre FM7 solutions there are out there running wild…. Not by filemaker Inc. And consultants are still billing time myself included working on those old projects.

If FM does not come up with an economically feasible replacement for the runtime, they do not get a penny more from me. The alternatives FM offers now web direct or clients buying our solutions and FMPro are too expensive for those of us that produce a solution targeting a specific group of individual users i.

Those users will migrate to web-based solutions that offer a comparable service that are not FM-based. Most of them will not pay for the cost of an online FMS-based solution which would include cost of a website, FM Server, and the connections or the alternative, paying for the solution and FMPro to run it.

I am sure that sooner or later somebody will come up with an structured program that is browser-based with MySQL in the backend that does the same as FM and can be installed on a personal computer or deployed online. Ibrahim, if you phrase your question a bit differently:.

What free product would a developer use to showcase their work and make it available to users to manage a wide range of business and other problems? While it currently lacks some key features available in runtimes, 'deprecated' implies that that gap will narrow by the time runtimes are finally cut. Go already compensates for those missing features with server connectivity. The new ability in Go 14 to hide the Go frame starts to sound like a kiosk. By metering concurrent connections, FMI has solved the eternal problem of runtimes-- how to allow them to connect without killing desktop sales.

I have a one word solution to this latest disaster, and a simple wish. No wait, even better a three word solution to this latest disaster. LiveCode Community Edition. I have a feeling it is going to go thru the roof soon.

We use a demo mac, heavily limited through Parental Controls, running just 2 applications: Filemaker and TeamViewer. If a client is slightly interested in a demo, we give him TeamViewer access and he can go silly on the machine for a period of time.

Otherwise - if more than slightly - we grab a laptop and go visit him. We can afford that, in a small country like ours. Every demo of software I've seen, especially for something that will be customized, has been either an online demo where they walk you through a screen share Take a look at Xojo. I'm working on a project to help FileMaker devs make the move. Apparently not. No company would cut a significant part of its income, even it is a loss leader so I have to assume that FMI is not seeing any long-term or strategic benefits from keeping the runtime around.

I have no problem with it, I've never built one. For me the power of the platform is in the combination of rapid development coupled with scalable multi-user.

But if you strongly believe that you are bringing a lot of revenue to FMI by using runtimes it should be straightforward to put the numbers together and sit down with some folks at FMI to pitch your case. Numbers talk, and I'm sure they'll listen. Could you explain the "over night" part? Because I've got a copy of FMA 14 and the runtime option is there.

And I read the notes, and " to be deprecated " means "in the future". So, unless your nights are months in length, I don't see how FMI is doing anything "overnight". Is hyperbole really the best this for this community? I tried LiveCode and it takes three or more times the effort it takes in FileMaker to create a trivial solution. I suppose that eventually someone is skilled enough to make it in the same time but, what for?.

People have been saying that about FileMaker for 30 years. I give it 5 yrs. Fred, runtime has never been a "key feature" of Filemaker. It might have been a key feature for those that spent once on FMPA and sold times the same solution it took 3 months or so to put together, at each. I can understand that multiplication of this trend by a large number can cause a lot of people at Filemaker to slowly begin uttering 4-letter words and nothing else. For me what holds is what Wim said, i.

The consideration is the database. If you need "free" then there are free databases. So that's NOT the argument! So there's one in the "plus column" The argument "for" fm runtime: it's easier to create to FM developers? Ok, I'm just mad cause I'm one of the every three years guys who doesn't matter. Does that not equate to "runtime"? I've created them, distributed them, know the need.

I just have more than one way to skin that cat It's all good mikeinhawaii. Nothing really bothers me. I totally get your frustration. There have been a lot of reasons lately for me to increase the number of tools in my toolbelt. Then, I can pick the one that's best for the project. Which helps me and the customer. I'm there with you. I've done a lot with FM, but me personally, can't lay down the money without some way to make it back. I do some work with FM at my day job.

I think I'm really good at it, especially with some of the solutions that I've help out with over the years. But I'm not in a full-time development role right now. So it limits how much I spring for. I'm hoping the near future will reveal something from FMI that makes me feel a little different. In the mean time, I will continue to increase my FM skills, add some other platforms also, and keep growing.

Maybe one day I'll move to a full-time development role. That's a whole other ballgame. Still there in fm14 help. Everybody can download a day free trial FMP 14 copy from filemaker. Although 14 questions out of which 13 are mandatory is nauseating tbh, hint hint. Self-destructing copy, ofc. Don't see the demo-your-product problem. This thread is another symptom for a dilemma.

The dilemma is that simply there is no Roadmap. A roadmap shows direction and should be communicated Also, a roadmap must include customer input. So, there is no direction. The community is put into a vacuum because of lack of communication. The results are confusion and assumptions as evident in this thread. No clear stragety, one part doesn't know where the other part is heading.

The community needs leadership. Why isn't this happening? FM Runtime to be deprecated in the future?!! Report an issue. Bug Report. I am really disappointed by your thin point of vue and even offensed by your haughty and egoist statements. But it is not only a peculiar question, and even we will survive to runtime's death, my customers placed confident on me and i am very very sad thinking about the worse scenario possible. I don't know the rest of you but I'm just an overworked developer trying to help and be helped.

I'm not interested on any kind of community leadership. I've invested time and money growing my relationship with FMI and it has paid off by far. The day I'm not happy with FileMaker anymore you won't see any post of mine ever. I'd be gone instead of complaining just because FMI doesn't see things the way I see them.

I would imagine that the FM Runtime has from FM4 onwards been justified as a means of enabling folk to try out a single user version of a FM Solution without having to wait whilst they obtain a demo version of FMP.

Most folk these days have too short an attention span to do this, everyone expects everything right now. Now that any would-be user can instead try out a FM Solution using WebDirect, rather more easily then downloading a very large executable file, I can see the logic for flagging up the Run-time version for deprecation. For FMI to continue profitably and happily well beyond its product's 30th birthday it has to simplify its product range so that its limited resources can take the platform forward more rapidly based on just three products, Server, a Developer Application and WebDirect.

Without Pro, Pro Runtime and Go FMI's business will be capable of far greater innovation with far less cross product compatibility complexity soaking up resources. Folk generally don't like change but I see this as inevitable if FMI is sufficiently focused to achieve ensuring that WebDirect is good enough to usurp both the client products.

I don't work for Filemaker but I often play devil's advocate and my message was nothing more than that, too bad you didn't get it. IMHO it's important to be able to put yourself at the place and in the role of a partner, see things through his eyes.

In this peculiar situation, the partner is obviously Filemaker inc. No egoism, no "haughtiness" here. But being aware of living in capitalism should belong to your alarm collection. Surely Joshua, will not Webdirect be the thin non client? The future is server based web services, would you not agree? I wasn't clear. By 'showcase' I did not mean 'demo'. I meant offer a version. Whatever we call it, Go offers a viable alternative to a desktop runtime.

Aside from the obvious advantage of connectivity to the server, mobile is hot right now, and we can expect Go to enjoy a great deal of further development.

The abandoned stepchild, not so much. Hold on. I'm reading to see where the reply to me regarding demos is coming from. Oh yes. Well that wasn't a post about me having a problem with demos. I personally have a plan to handle demos. I was merely commenting on what I'm seeing as a trend in the industry. I am sympathetic toward those that rely on it currently. The original runtime was pretty interesting. In FileMaker 2. Since then it has been stand alone and therefore not relevant for our solutions.

The runtime without network connection was mainly interesting for sending out demo solutions. But which business models is it that we are going to loose without the runtime? And local databases like sqlite and other flavors of sql dbs.

Using C. But I would recommend to keep on using FMP for prototyping. And once you get the job, use technos with serious roadmap It will take 10x more time t first than developping in fmp but day after day you'll get faster and faster. And so happy and free! I think the future is a good discussion point maybe not worth adding into this thread, but I think Web Services are the present. Mobile apps are the future.

And this statement may even be dated by years. I don't know what the future is for business data management, but I think FMI is on the right track. Look at this community! It's so much criticism and vitriol. And from who? How much do most of us on this forum actually contribute to FMI's bottom line?

How invested are we in our current business model? Who here is planning strategically for the future? I don't think most bad apples understand FM as a business. In the tech space, it is tiny. Compared to most of the posters in this forum though, it's huge. So, who does FMI listen to? Not the general public. Probably not most of the people on this forum. I'm guessing the FM purchasing power of everyone on this thread doesn't break the top clients of FMI.

Look, my knowledge is pretty limited, I am not an insider. I'm a nobody. However, my impression is that FMI does get input from important stakeholders.

I would be shocked if FMI's strategic planning wasn't responsive to their input, sometimes direct, sometimes filtered through sales reps. Along with maybe the input of a few other less-revenue generating but influential players. And their own staff of course. Forget it. I'm honored that a sales rep comes to the 20 member local FMPUG meeting on his way back from meeting with a big client every couple years.

I'm grateful that FM continues to put out a consistent product, year after year. Try looking around at other platforms. Google ". Everywhere someone hates their current platform and changes and upgrades. You want to complain? Ask Meerkat how they feel about Twitter.

We're an echo chamber here because many FM Developers don't have experience with other platforms. Don't subscribe to techie news. But there's a wider world out there and we have it pretty good. FMGo probably was first, and as of today maybe smartest and most versatile database application for the smartphone. That 40? I am a developer, as are you. I think most developers understand or at least can empathise with the challenges that FMI face in navigating a rapidly changing market.

I know also that some folk on the web sink to levels of expression they would not say face to face. I have been developing virtually full time in FM since I love what I can do with it and it is a tool set that I never tire of using. The old FM Techtalk was developers only and a valuable resource, a fantastic way to find out how to do stuff you don't yet know about. You have helped me in the past and I was very grateful.

The new community is open to all and hence there will inevitably be much more noise and inevitably it will attract some who like to try to knock things down rather than build them up. Sad but inevitable.

Hard to imagine how they can be developers with that sort of attitude? In my experience FMI do listen and listen hard. They have many conflicting factors to take into account and will never allow themselves to be a hostage to fortune by openly saying what they plan to do.

That is where they are headed, to me it has been obvious since April that FMI were headed for mobile devices in a serious manner, because they understood that very soon everyone would expect the ease of use and speed of well designed mobile apps on all their devices.

The old way of installing software and reading manuals was dead or dying. So my approach was - from April - to start learning how to make stuff easy and fast over WAN on mobile. Simplicity and a little lateral thinking was my solution, and I learn more every day. Yes Network includes Internet.

I can open my browser an view HTML without being connected to anything else. I can even run PHP code without being connected to any network or internet.

Definitely stand alone. My browser can be a thin client and NO network needed. That sort of idea. See MAMP or equiv for turning your machine into full web serving without any internet. Though that's more than most would need to do. I'm just saying much can be done with web tech without being on any internet. If you have iOS or Android and apps you are using databases make no mistake! Somebody suggested it here and I am trying it. LiveCode is poorly organized for databases. I cannot figure out how to created and display my tables.

Waste of time! From what I can see Xojo is better than LiveCode. But brace yourself. You will learn really quickly everything that FileMaker does for you. It's easy to take for granted. Suppose in a mystical land you created the very first paint and when you sold a bucket you also included the recipee for creating your own paint.

Your business progressed but you look around and others are becoming multi-millionaires off of your paint while you are only making a middle class income. So, you raise the price of your paint. You make a little more but still others are making millions off of your paint and giving you nothing in return. You are selling one tanker truck full a year but there are 10, tanker trucks selling your product that someone else produced.

You did sell stocks in your company and as your grew the price went up. Someone was always willing to pay unrealistic price for the stock hoping that some one else would be willing to pay even more hoping that someone else would be Now those people are pounding on your door and screaming that their stocks are losing value and that you must do something for them.

They didn't give you any money, they gave it to someone else and paid 20 times as much as you received for the same stock, maybe even a hundred times as much. Your company is more profitable than it has ever been but your stockholders are looking at thsoe 10, tankers of paint you didn't make or sell and demanding that you stop this. One buy buys a gallong of paint and gets a formula for how to make his own and then makes 10, gallons and sells it and we don't get a penny!

Of course now that a million homes have been painted with your paint that was manufactured by others, you have a secret weapon. When time comes that someone wants to repaint their home, they discover that other brands of paint won't stick to your paint.

You chuckle. Slowly the truth rises to the surface. After all those years your unpaid sales staff has created a market of 1,, homes that will need to use your new paint and you ain't giving away the formula. Everyone will now have to buy from you, no more freebies.

I don't understand what "deprecated" means in this context. In general, it means that you frown on something or consider it inferior or unworthy or outright repugnant. It's like a dad telling his gay son to get out and never darken his doorstep again. Runtime solutions are like the children of FileMaker Pro.
